Guide · Choosing stock

Brand new, UK used or Naija used: which should you stock?

Brand new stock is the simplest to sell but usually needs the most capital. UK used often suits buyers who want a better model for less, but it needs careful checking. Naija used usually costs the least and carries the most risk. The right mix depends on your customers and how much testing you can do.

The four conditions compared

ConditionWhat it meansMain benefitMain risk
Brand newSealed and unusedSimple to sell and easy to explainUsually needs more capital; check whether any warranty applies locally
UK usedUsed abroad, then imported. Also called foreign-used or tokunboBetter models at a lower price than newCondition varies, and locked or repaired units can get through
Naija usedUsed in Nigeria and sold back into the marketUsually the lowest buying priceMore likely to have been repaired, so faults and disputes can be more common
RefurbishedRepaired or restored before resaleCan look and work like much newer stockQuality depends on who did the work and which parts they used

Match the stock to your customers

  • Brand new suits buyers who want peace of mind, such as companies and schools that need clean paperwork and gift buyers.
  • UK used suits buyers who want a premium iPhone, Samsung Galaxy or business laptop without paying the new price.
  • Naija used suits very price-conscious buyers and shops with a trusted technician to check every unit.
  • Refurbished suits buyers who understand what they're getting, as long as you're open about what was repaired.

Count the hidden costs of used stock

The lowest buying price doesn't always mean the highest profit. Before you compare, add the costs that don't appear on the dealer's quote:

  • Time to test every unit, or the cost of a technician to do it.
  • Units that fail your checks and can't easily be returned.
  • Repairs and replacement parts, such as batteries and screens.
  • Refunds and returns from customers after a sale.
  • Your reputation, if buyers feel misled about condition.

Agree what the grade means

Dealers can use the same words differently, so "Grade A" from one may not match "Grade A" from another. Before you agree a price on used or refurbished stock, write down what you'll accept: scratches, battery health, replaced parts, and whether the box and charger are included. Then ask for a sample. For a full list of what to request, see what to ask for in a bulk quote.

Check used stock before you pay

The biggest risks with used stock are account locks, undisclosed repairs and worn batteries. Our checklists for UK-used iPhones and used laptops show how to find them. Test every unit if you can. If you can't, choose the sample yourself, and agree what happens to any faulty units.

How to start your mix

  1. Pick one main condition that suits your customers and your capital.
  2. Buy a small order and track which units sell, how quickly, and which come back.
  3. Add a second condition only when you have the money and skills to handle it.
  4. Label each unit's true condition on your display and your receipts.

Asking for a specific condition on Dealrs
